isabel urbina peña
Isabel Urbina Peña is a Venezuelan artist and designer based in Brooklyn. Her work focuses on letters and books. Steered by a fascination with the handwritten word, she has taken an interest in working with analog tools to embrace and explore their inherent connection to mark making. Through exploring letterforms, her work has slowly moved towards abstract drawings: leaving aside the figurative and focusing on the bare minimum to express and convey meaning.
Language often acts as a bridge, enabling connection and a sense of belonging—or as a barrier, isolating and separating us. Abstract marks offer a way to convey this language paradox—these are enticing visual forms, yet they are indecipherable. They are fluid and inviting, personal and intimate. There’s a calligraphic sense to these, but they’re not quite calligraphy or letters, just markings: a testament that someone was there, on the other side of the paper, trying to say something.
She continues to explore the book as a tangible object for documentation and collections of ideas. Most recently, she has been experimenting with Risograph and was an Artist In Residence at SVA’s RisoLAB. Her artist books are part of Printed Matter’s and Penumbra Foundation’s collection. Isabel’s work has been recognized by The New York Times, AIGA and she was selected as a New Visual Artist: 15 under 30 by PRINT Magazine.
